Although the character of Jára Cimrman was the inspiration of Ladislav Smoljak, Jiří Šebánek and Zdeněk Svěrák, it is the collaboration of Svěrák, and Smoljak, that has helped to create the most famous fictional Czech character in recent years. Using their talents as actors, writers and directors, they established the Divadlo Járy Cimrmana as one of the foremost Czech theatre companies of the last 50 years.
Their first official Jára Cimrman collaboration was the play, Pub in the Glade ( Hospoda na mýtince) and after that they went on to write another 12 plays together that not only embedded firmly the character and sayings of Jára Cimrman into the psyche of the Czech nation , but also created a rich, enduring legacy of Czech comedy.
However, theatre was not enough because they also collaborated on some of the best Czech film comedies of the 70s and 80s.
